What is a 3-ply surgical mask?
A 3-ply surgical mask is a face mask made of three layers. Each of the three layers has its own specific function to fulfil, and the combination of these three layers is what gives the mask its protective qualities.
The outer layer of the mask is designed to repel liquid substances, keeping them well away from the wearer’s face. The middle layer is perhaps the strongest in terms of defence. This layer will stop any airborne particles from getting inside the mask. The inner layer is an important layer in terms of comfort, helping to wick sweat away from the skin and ensure that the mask is comfortable to wear for prolonged periods of time.
Is a 3-ply mask medical grade?
Some 3-ply face masks are medical-grade, and can be used safely in medical settings. However, others may be better suited to protecting wearers in situations where social distancing is difficult.
To determine whether or not a mask is medical-grade, you’ll need to check how far it’s been tested. Medical-grade masks are tested to extreme lengths, and must be proven to filter at least 95% of droplets. They also tend to be made from specific materials, such as polypropylene, polyethylene or cellulose.
How to safely wear your mask
To get the best possible protection from your 3-ply mask, you’ll need to follow a set of rules when putting the mask on, and taking it off.
Ensure the mask fits as closely as possible to your skin, to increase its protective benefits as much as possible. The elastic of the ear loops should ensure a tight fit, but these can be adjusted if the mask is loose.
When the mask has been used, remove it carefully, avoiding touching the outer layer of the mask as you do so. Dispose of it safely, and take out a new 3-ply mask when you next need to wear one.
Can you reuse a disposable mask?
No, 3-ply masks are intended to be disposable. The masks should never be reused in a medical setting or elsewhere. There is a risk of cross-contamination if masks are worn more than once, and this can significantly reduce the protective benefits of the mask. For this reason, 3-ply masks should never be worn more than once.
How do you fold a disposable mask?
Disposable masks can be folded in half lengthwise, to help improve the shape when it comes time for them to be worn. Prepare your mask by folding it so that the bottom and top are together, and knot the ear loops at the corners. When you unfold the mask, you’ll notice that the shape is fuller, and the mask should fit better.
